A CAMPAIGN against fly tipping in Bewsey and Whitecross has been hailed a success.

Rubbish has been cleared from the streets and only one fixed penalty notice for dumping three black bags was issued during Warrington Borough Council’s appeal.

Clr David Keane, executive board member for environment and public protection, said: “We surveyed residents in the area and 65 per cent of them said fly tipping was a big problem.

“Prevention is better than cure, so we wrote to all households in the relevant streets and sent a team made up of neighbourhood wardens, council recycling officers and colleagues from Golden Gates Housing Trust to go door-to-door, providing advice on recycling and telling people how to report fly tipping and dog fouling.

“This took three weeks and our approach to working closely with residents seems to have worked.

“In an area where two-thirds of residents said fly tipping was a problem, we only had to issue one fixed-penalty notice.”

Further work will be done in a different area of Whitecross this month.
