HE realised he had a natural talent for playing bowls after he decided to follow in his granddad’s footsteps.

But now, five years after first picking up his first set, Danny Woods, from Burtonwood, will represent his country in the England Under 21s Short Mat Bowling Squad.

The 16-year-old, who first started playing at the Burtonwood Community Centre, said: “I was really pleased when I found out. All my family and friends are made up for me.”

Danny was picked for the team after attending trials in Northampton earlier this year after his coach, Brandon Whittaker, recommended he try out.

“My mum and dad are really proud of me. I didn’t expect it,” said Danny, who is currently looking to start a course in motor vehicles at college.

“I would also like to thank Brandon for playing a major role in helping me be selected for the squad.

“I don’t think I will get nervous. I’m just training lots,” he added.

Andrew Carr, from the centre, added: “It is a very big achievement to be selected to play for your country.

“No one from Burtonwood has ever been selected to play for England before at the sport.”
