THE tired old mother-in-law jokes certainly do not apply to Nina Povey and Gill Ross.

For the duo from Stockton Heath have teamed up to launch their own venture together based on their mutual love of baking.

Let Them Eat Cake is an afternoon tea style catering service using vintage china along with vintage recipes from the Ross family cookbook.

Nina, aged 32, said: "Back in the late 1800s the Ross family won medals for cake baking in Birkenhead where they had a cafe and baking goes back five generations.

"I loved baking and doing events life that. With being in maternity leave we had lots of time and we did a lot of baking together.

"I have always had lots of vintage china and have always been buying vintage stuff.

"And I have always said how amazing the cakes are and you should sell them.

"We put on a tea party for family and they said it was fantastic you should do this as a business. It just stemmed from there."

And the English teacher is setting up the business all while on maternity leave and dealing with a six-month-old baby.

"I'm not the kind of person who can sit around and do nothing," she added. "I can't sit still, I like having projects."

And to launch their new business they held an event at St John's Hall in Walton.

More than 300 people turned out to try some of the old-fashioned sweet treats including Japonaise fancies, Viennese fingers and Brunswicks.

And the morsels went down a delight with the crowds.
