Barn owls found at shoot

THREE barn owls have been found nesting at a shoot near Daresbury.

Three chicks and two adult birds were found by Ben Gregory, a project officer for The British Association for Shooting and Conservation’s Green Shoots Scheme, after the birds were spotted hunting in the area.

Mr Gregory said: “After the particularly wet weather last year which led to poor overall breeding success this is an excellent discovery. The boxes have to be in the right habitat to successfully attract the birds, and land managed for shooting provides this.”

The birds were ringed to monitor barn owl population in the area.

The number of barn owls have declined by almost half over the past 75 years.
