Project to spark improved lighting

THE importance of reducing carbon emissions in the town while coping on a lower budget have been underlined to Appleton Parish Council.

Dave Vasey, the council’s highway asset maintenance and street works manager, put forward the plan last Tuesday at the monthly parish council meeting, on Dudlow Green Road.

“We have to cope with lower budgets like everybody does but we have to reduce energy,” he said.

The council’s street lighting capital inverstment project, focusing on the replacement of street columns and lanterns in the area, will run until 2017.

“It is a major investment for the town and will help deliver a real reduction in energy,” added Mr Vasey.

Traffic concerns for residents

TRAFFIC on Lumb Brook Road, in Appleton, has been criticised by residents who are unsure of what action to take.

The issue was raised to PCSO Dave Mahon at last Tuesday’s Appleton Parish Council meeting.

Although a clear solution is yet to be resolved, PCSO Mahon will be investigating the matter to how improvements can be made to make it a safer place for residents.

He also spoke of a new device to catch speeders in and around the area, adding: “We have a portable speeding advice which will be put in place in the area but it won’t be able to stay on just one place.”

Doubt for former airfield site plans

PLANS to turn a former airfield site in Appleton into an underground garage with space for 118 vehicles have suffered a setback despite planning permission from Warrington Borough Council.

The development proposals at the former Stretton Airfield base also include a two-storey office building and extensive landscaping of the field to enhance its status.

The move received the go-ahead earlier this month but Cllr Peter Walker (LD –Appleton) has raised concerns.

“It has to be run past a nation unit now, as well as Cheshire East council, so it may or may not go ahead.”

Litter pick

A LIBERAL Democrat councillor has called for change after 14 bottles of vodka were found during a litter-pick close to an Appleton trading estate.

Brian Axcell (LD – Appleton) was on hand to help earlier this month but was disappointed with the litter levels surrounding land near Barley Castle Trading Estate.

“We did find quite a lot when we were there,” he said.

Appleton Parish councillor Irina Axcell (Hill Cliffe ward) added: “It would be nice to do the litter-pick on a regular basis and to get family and friends involved.”
