DEDICATED Appleton Boys under 14s players have battled through adversity to remain as a team but the manager admits there is a 'fear over the future' if more players are not registered.

THE 'B team', managed by Rica Mason, suffered the sudden departure of its manager and coach ahead of the last campaign, which featured just 11 full-time players.

Attention now turns to securing the services of more players for the next campaign to ensure the team can challenge for theWarrington Junior Football League Second Division title.

"The problem we have had this past season is the low number of players registered," said Rica, who lives in Appleton Thorn.

"The players are desperate to play and it is critical that we get more signed on to play.

"We had to cancel a lot of matches because we just didn't have enough players which was a real shame for the boys and the other teams.

"I think when youngsters get older they tend to give up competitive sport but the commitment shown by the boys and parents has been absolutely brilliant."

But despite the concern over next season, Rica admits the problem is widespread.

She added: "A lot of teams are going through a similar situation which is not good for anyone.

"What we are doing now is looking outside of Warrington at other struggling teams to possibly join forces with them.

"It is about getting the children out and active, rather than just being at home on their Xbox and things like that."

Throughout the summer the team will be training at New Lane field, in Appleton Thorn.

Rica will begin the registration process of squad players for the new season in mid-July.

The next season commences in September. For further information or to get involved call 07769 671138.
