A GROUP of 20 women will be cycling from Southport to Stockton Heath to raise funds for a two-year-old girl with a rare genetic disorder.

The ladies from Wild Bettys cycle club, formed at Stockton Heath's Wild Bikes store, will cover 40 miles on Saturday for Abbie Rose, who is from the area.

Abbie suffers from Rett syndrome - a condition which affects the development of the brain in just one in 12,000 female births.

All proceeds will go to Abbie's Trust to help raise enough money to buy a special computer so the youngster can communicate with those closest to her.

Wild Betty route leader and event organiser, Helen Guttridge, is confident of securing the £500 fundraising target ahead of the cycling challenge.

"The Wild Bettys are a group of local lady cyclists who were looking to find a local cause and help them raise funds," she said.

"A fellow Betty mentioned about her friend's daughter who has Rett syndrome and was trying to raise funds for a special computer to help her communicate with family and friends.

"As this is a predominantly female condition, we thought it the perfect cause for our all female cycling club."

So far more than 30 people have donated to the cause.
