Children wear neon to raise awareness of busy roads around their school
‘BE bright, be seen’ was the message from pupils at Appleton Thorn Primary School.
They donned neon clothing last Tuesday for a non-uniform day with a difference as the school community rallied to push the road safety message.
The campaign was part of Appleton Thorn Road Safety Week which was co-ordinated by the school’s PTA committee.
A PTA spokesman said: “The event is about raising awareness for children, parents and the village about road safety around the school.
“Parents had raised concerns over the traffic and parking around the school and there had been requests for road traffic calming measures nearby.
“Normally the PTA organise fundraising events for the school but this one was different as it was just about getting out the message for everyone to take care on the roads around the school.”
Bunting created by children was on display across the village along with posters they made in class.
O’Neill’s Signs in Runcorn also donated printed banners calling on motorists to slow down.
There were also visits to school from the council’s road safety team.
The Arley Road school has also had a donation of 160 high-vis vests from Arco so every child and adult in school has their own vest.
