FOXWOOD School pupils explored the great outdoors as part of the Woodland Communities Project.

Tim Kirwin, from the Cheshire and Merseyside Woodland Trust, took 19 children and 13 staff to Small Woods in Oakwood to learn about the environment through touch and smell.

The three classes also built dens, learned about woodland creatures and had to search for toy caterpillars.

Tim said: “The whole idea was to make the children feel like they weren’t in a classroom environment.

“It’s almost like hidden education because the kids were learning things without realising it.

“It was a fantastic morning. It’s always a pleasure to work with Foxwood School.”

Foxwood School was one of the last groups to benefit from the Big Lottery funded Woodland Communities Project which came to an end on Monday.

The scheme aimed to encourage residents to visit and take advantage of their woodland.
