A Padgate boxing gym owner who opened the facility two years ago to tackle anti-social behaviour in the area has been overwhelmed with its success.

The gym, on Marsh House Lane, celebrated its second birthday last Friday and owner John Murphy, aged 53, has recently opened another gym on Manchester Road, Woolston.

Former regional title holder John insists the new gym will follow the blueprint of the Padgate base and serve to keep youngsters occupied, as well as to condition aspiring boxers.

He said: “The main purpose of the first gym was to get kids off the streets and that still remains the same – it is very important.

“We aim to teach the youngsters discipline and respect, all through boxing and fitness.

“I am really proud to have opened the second gym and just can’t believe what we have achieved in the two years since we opened the first one.”

The new gym will offer participants a diverse style of training and John believes people across the town can give it a go, regardless of age or fitness levels.

“In Marsh House Gym, it is more boxing based but in the new facility we are offering a totally different style of training, consisting of more circuits and aerobic classes," he added.

Former world champion Martin Murray, who lives nearby, is among the boxers who has been to the venue.

Sessions at both gyms run on the hour between 10am and 8pm every day.
