COMMUTER misery for people in Newton could soon be a thing of the past.
Newton-le-Willows train station has been singled out by Network Rail as a station that the firm aims to develop by 2009.
The station has been earmarked for a number of years as a possible park-and-ride site for commuters travelling to Manchester and Liverpool.
Network Rail identified the station as one of the key developments in the company's North West Route Utilisation Strategy, which was published earlier this week.
The strategy takes into account initiatives that the company looks to complete in the next 10 years and the Newton station has been highlighted in its short-term aims in the next two years.
Plans to create the park-and-ride interchange were first mooted in 2005. Under those proposals, the station would benefit from 250 park-and-ride spaces with an integrated rail and train interchange.
The redevelopment was put forward as one of the travel solutions for the Omega employment park in nearby Burtonwood.
A spokesman from Network Rail said: "We hope to do work in the next couple of years. If that goes well we will use that as a template for other park and ride schemes and use the station as a catalyst."
Network Rail say that it is now working on proposals for the station with Merseytravel.
