STOCKTON Heath residents fear work to improve their pavement and road may 'never happen' after discussions with the council.

The council has been carrying out resurfacing work on a number of streets in the area, including London Road and Sandy Lane, but those living close to East Avenue believe parts of the area are being ignored.

The council's £762,000 'structural maintenance' schemes in Stockton Heath, over the last three months, is part of this year's programme of highway works.

An inspector visited the 'deteriorating' road, which has a pothole, and path on East Avenue but there was deemed to be no need for 'intervention'.

One of the concerned residents, who does not wish to be named, believes the ideal opportunity to take action has been missed.

She said: "There is a big pothole on the road and the pavements are a problem and are getting worse.

"The council is doing work just around the corner and I think the work could be carried out easily as they have the equipment, workmen and materials they need here.

"This will never happen if they don't get it done now – it is frustrating, especially as it is such a busy road."

The council has said improvements are assessed by usage and footfall.

It also confirmed any work will be delivered on a 'needs basis' but has urged residents to get in touch if they have any concerns.

A spokesman added: "While the East Avenue area has not been identified as a priority for improvement works at this time, the section of East Avenue between Sandy Lane and London Road has just been resurfaced, along with Sandy Lane, Arley Avenue and Grappenhall Road as part of a package of schemes in this area.

"Individual potholes that are reported are looked at throughout the year and repaired if they meet certain depths.

"There is a larger investment of £40 million that is being developed for Warrington's road network, with each ward area receiving a proportion of funding to tackle the worst areas over the next three to five years.

"This programme will be made available in the autumn.

"The backlog of highway maintenance faced by Warrington is far greater than budgets available which is a national problem and not unique to Warrington."
