Bridgewater students win through to national finals thanks to maths prowess

FOUR budding mathematicians from Bridgewater High School will be fighting it out among the country’s elite young maths minds in a national final.

The pupils at the Hall Drive lower school site pitted their wits against others from across the region at the UK Team Maths Challenge at Manchester University.

And year eight pupils Alex Wan and Easlish Green along with year nine pupils Sam Bealing and Yi Chen Hock came out on top.

They had to battle it out with number conundrums over four rounds and came first.

Gillian MacIntyre, from the school, said: “There were four different categories, one was a challenge where they had to answer maths questions, one where a team of two had clues for numbers going across and two had clues for numbers going down and they had to match up like a crossword.

“They then had a shuttle round and a relay round to complete before they were crowned winners.

“It was a fantastic day to give them an opportunity to go to the Great Hall at Manchester University and it is a fantastic achievement for them.”

The quartet were one of 80 teams to book a place in the national final after more than 1,600 schools took part in the event organised by the UK Mathematics Trust.

They will compete in the London final in June.
