£10m pumping station will keep Bewsey's waste flowing

BEWSEY residents are flushed with success thanks to a £10 million project to replace a water pumping station which has been causing problems for years.

Work will start on replacing the pumping station at Bewsey Bridge to take wastewater from homes in the area.

It comes after years of misery for residents living nearby who have seen the brooks surrounding Sankey Valley and Bewsey estates become filled with sewage after heavy downpours flooded the water network.

Geraud Ramond, project manager said: “The old pumping station is nearing the end of its useful life and needs replacing.

“This investment will ensure that Warrington’s underground network of sewers remains flowing smoothly for decades to come.

“The scheme will also help to prevent local sewers from becoming overwhelmed when there is very heavy rainfall. This will reduce the likelihood of sewers overflowing into local streams and brooks when the heavens open.”

Work will begin this spring to build the pumping station at Bewsey Bridge.

DCT Civil Engineering has been awarded the main contract.

Once complete the station will be able to pump 1,890 litres of water every second up to the treatment works – keeping Warrington flowing.

The pumping station is to be built on a landfill site off Bewsey Bridge, next to the existing pumping station, which will be retired from service.

All the spoil from the excavation work will be used to landscape the site.
