Former student visits collegiate to open new building named after him

AN Appleton brickie has been honoured by the college where he learnt his trade after he was crowned world champion.

Ashley Terron was on hand to help open the Ashley Terron Brickwork area at Warrington Collegiate.

The 21-year-old was recognised for his outstanding contribution to the college and apprenticeships – something he is a strong advocate for.

It came after he picked up gold at the WorldSkills International event last year for his bricklaying brilliance and that success has seen him go on to meet the likes of David Cameron and Nick Clegg.

Presenting him with a silver trowel to mark the impact on the college, principal Paul Hafren said: “Ashley’s story encourages and inspires young people to step outside their comfort zone and continuously strive for excellence in everything they do.

“Ashley is incredibly energetic in supporting students at Warrington Collegiate through masterclasses and mentoring as well as attending open evenings to talk to prospective students about the vocational route to university and career success.”

As well as his international success and recognition from the Worshipful Company of Tilers and Bricklayers as a master craftsman, Ashley was invited by the chairman of Redrow Homes to join the company as assistant site manager and act as Redrow’s training scheme ambassador.

Ashley said: “I’m proud and delighted to have a building named after me. I wouldn’t be where I am today without my three years training at Warrington Collegiate so I’m delighted to be able to share my success with the college.”

Ashley has also been nominated by Warrington Collegiate for the National Apprenticeship Champion of the Year Award.
