A FAILING Woolston playgroup has been turned around after Ofsted praised the performance of teachers and leaders.

Warren Pre-School Playgroup, based at the Church of the Ascension, Warren Lane, has been graded as ‘good’ by Ofsted.

The positive inspection comes 18 months after the playgroup was failed by Ofsted, and given a rating of ‘inadequate’.

Following the latest spot-check in May, the education watchdog commended many areas in a report just published.

“Children enjoy their time at the pre-school where their individual needs are well met and valued, including those who are learning English as an additional language and children with special educational needs” said Her Majesty’s Inspector, Linda Shore.

“Teaching is good overall. Accurate observations and assessments of progress are used to plan activities that enable children to make good progress given their starting points and capabilities.

“Links with parents and a variety of agencies are strong. Communication is very good, relevant information is shared and children’s individual needs are supported and met very well. This means that all children are fully included and have a positive attitude towards learning.”

Ofsted also praised bosses at the pre-school. It said: “Leadership and management are very good. The team work effectively together to ensure children receive a good quality early years experience and are well safeguarded.”

Areas to improve were also highlighted.

Resources and activities could be made ‘even more exciting’ by ‘providing opportunities for children to enjoy books and develop their early writing skills’, while outside.
