Penketh High School receive national recognition for fastest improving GCSE results

STAFF and pupils have been celebrating after Penketh High School received national recognition for achieving some of the fastest improving GCSE results in the country.

The Heath Road school was ranked as in the top 10 per cent of schools in England for improving its exam results year on year from 2008 to 2011.

Schools representative body SSAT released the rankings for every school in the country and found Penketh High had improved by 19 percentage points overall.

Sue Williamson, chief executive of SSAT, said: “Penketh High School should be congratulated for its stunning achievement in improving its GCSE results.

“The school has proved itself to be one of the best in the country at improving GCSE outcomes for its students and there is plenty that others could learn from their success.

“These results are testament to the commitment and hard work of the students, teachers and leadership team and a vindication of their belief in high expectations, good teaching and ambition for every young person.”

She added the progress measures prove schools can ‘make a difference and raise achievement above expectations’.

Head teacher Jeff Hughes said: “It is always rewarding for a school to receive national recognition for the progress they are making in raising expectations and attainment.

“Our school community is thriving and I have a wonderful team of staff who continue to work very hard to build on this success.”

The news capped off a busy week for the school as it marked the premiere of its latest film Legacy.
