A FORMER Great Sankey High pupil has enjoyed a great first term to college life after receiving a prestigious scholarship.

Nathan Holland follows in the footsteps of Rebecca Ashwood, Rebecca Angell and Thomas Scott, from Warrington, who are all second year scholarship students at Cronton Sixth Form College in Widnes and after a successful first year are now applying for university.

Nathan was one of ten exceptional students who were selected for the scholarship award after a series of interviews which took place earlier this year at the college.

The students were then awarded the scholarships because of their proven talent and flair in the college’s three centres of excellence subject areas, science and maths, performing arts and sports.

Nathan has been awarded a scholarship in maths and science and is planning to go to university to train as a structural engineer after completing his A-levels in chemistry, physics, maths and history.

He said: “I was over the moon when I heard I had been awarded the scholarship and was really pleased with my achievement."

Mary Murphy, college principal, said: “Our students have settled in well to their studies and are participating in many enrichment activities including the Duke of Edinburgh scheme, the Science and Medical Club, College productions and the Debating Society.

“These scholarships are designed to support students and provide financial assistance towards the costs of fulfilling their potential in their chosen field.

"For example, students may use the money for attending competitions, buying equipment, paying for specialist coaching or tuition and/or studying towards extension awards.”
