£10 taxi bill is too much
for pensioner Ken to
continue weekly meetings

A PENSIONER says he may have to put a stop to his charity work after Lymm’s evening bus service was axed.

The closure of the Warrington Coachways bus from Warrington to Altrincham means there is no service to the town centre from Lymm after 7.30pm.

The last bus leaving Warrington Bus Station is 7pm.

All this means that for Ken Smith, aged 68, a trip to Warrington for his weekly meetings of the Warrington branch of the Buffaloes at the Original Wire on Orford Lane will cost more than £10 in single taxi fares.

Network Warrington has agreed to take on the service during the day but it is still in discussions with the council over funding the evening service.

Mr Smith, who lives in Statham, said: “I used to be able to be picked up from Lymm, walk to the pub and get the bus back. But not any more.

“Why can’t they run a small bus that will take people there?

“That is all I am asking for.

“There would be a number of people using it each day. Now I could be stranded.”

Clr Ian Marks (LD – Lymm) says: “Councillors and residents are pleased that Network Warrington has taken over the daytime service. But we are pressing for a reinstatement of some of the evening services.

“This is under review and we will be lobbying hard on behalf of our residents who don’t have a car and rely on evening buses.”
