A CARPENTRY and joinery apprentice at Warrington Collegiate is carving a career for himself after taking second place at a major competition.

Elliot Humphreys from Culcheth, was runner-up in the senior category of SkillBuild Competition despite being one of the youngest entrants.

The 18-year-old took a prize despite many of the students having an edge over him. Many were studying a level above him and some had worked in the industry for a few years.

Elliot said: "I’m absolutely thrilled to be awarded second place. Carpentry is my passion and one day I’m hoping to have my own company specialising in renovations.

"I’d really like to thank my lecturers at college and the company I work for, Trinity Renovations, who have given me so much encouragement and support."

So far, Elliot's experience in the industry includes working on renovations at Salford Cathedral and being part of a team restoring an old pottery Stoke-on-Trent.

Ben Whitfield, lecturer in carpentry and joinery at Warrington Collegiate, added: "This is a fantastic achievement for Elliot, his hard work and dedication is an inspiration to others."
