WORK to regenerate Birchwood Forest Park starts this week.

The major project involves the refurbishment of the play area and an outdoor gym while Birchwood Town Council has stated that a football pitch and a skateboard and BMX area could be introduced in the long term.

But the first phase will involve tree thinning to improve views, access and safety.

The plans were kick-started at Birchwood Town Council in May when it was announced that WREN (Waste Recycling Environmental) had awarded £50,000 towards play and recreation facilities at the Forest Park.

The not-for-profit business helps benefit the lives of people who live close to landfill sites by giving grants for community projects.

A spokesman for Warrington Borough Council said: “Work is due to start on Birchwood Park at the end of January. The first phase of the work will be tree thinning, and poor quality trees not suitable for long term retention will also be removed, to create more open views in the park and to improve the safety and security for visitors.

“As the woodlands are home to many forms of wildlife, care will be taken to avoid damage to valuable wildlife habitats. A notice is on display at the site to explain the work.

“Plans are also moving forward with the next phase of work in the park, which involves the refurbishment of the children’s play area and installation of an outdoor gym.”
