A £13,416 grant will help restore a woodland path for ramblers and dog walkers in Gorse Covert.

The money was awarded by WREN, a not-for-profit organisation that finances community, conservation and heritage projects.

Work is due to start in early November, starting with tree-thinning on either side of the path leading from Birchwood Forest Park and along the mound behind Bramshill Close, Applecross Close, Aldewood Close and Hamsterley Close.

Path resurfacing work will then follow.

Nigel Balding, chairman of the Friends of Gorse Covert Mounds, said: “This will make a great improvement for a busy path used by many residents, visitors and commuters.

"The path has become increasingly boggy in the winter and a new surface will last for many years.

"There will be a certain amount of disruption while works take place, but I hope we can work with the Woodland Trust to let people know what is happening and minimise the impact.”

Neil Oxley, Woodland Trust site manager, added: “We’re grateful to WREN for providing this funding which will make a huge difference to the woods, which have become a real community asset."
