Ground will open in time for rugby season after major works

A £520,000 project to revamp Shaw Street Recreation Ground is set to be completed in time for the 2015 rugby season.

Improvements to the car park and the changing facilities will take place this year after the scheme was approved by Warrington Borough Council in March.

Clr Matt Smith, from Culcheth and Glazebury Parish Council, said: “The work on Shaw Street Recreation Ground is long overdue but this has been a project which we were determined to see implemented.

“That’s why we have been snapping at the council’s heels on a regular basis to ensure that the time and investment Newchurch needs will be delivered.

“The timetable that has now been put in place will ensure that the works are completed in time for the 2015 rugby season.

“This will make a huge difference to Newchurch, and the village as a whole.

“We particularly want to thank everyone who added their name to our ‘Refurbish Our Rec Ground’ campaign, which helped us to demonstrate to the council the strength of support for this project.”

The funding for the Shaw Street scheme has come from a bid to the borough council’s capital programme.

Works on the car park, including drainage, will take place first in the summer.

Revamped changing facilities will follow and the improvements will be made in agreement with the rugby teams who use them to minimise disruption.
