Special maths revision sessions pull in pupils who are eager to learn more

THE school week has become a little bit longer for pupils at a Latchford school.

Sir Thomas Boteler CE High School has been opening its doors to year 11 youngsters on Saturdays in preparation for their maths exams.

And despite the thought of going to school on a Saturday filling many teenagers with dread, the pupils at the Grammar School Road school are full of praise for the scheme.

One of those attending the maths accelerated learning programme is Aaron Arnold.

He said: “I really enjoy coming to school on a Saturday, even though I would love to be in bed. I am learning on a day I would not usually be. Thanks to the teachers who put this on.”

Robbie Doran added: “I like Saturday morning maths because it is a great learning environment, it’s hard to revise at home with distractions.”

There are four areas the weekend classes tackle right up to A*s.

On the first week 55 out of 59 pupils turned up and last week 69 attended classes with more asking to join in.

A school spokesman said: “The project was set up by the deputy head teacher Bev Scott-Herron who worked very closely with the maths department in identifying the students and there are three maths teachers involved in the programme - Stephen Kennedy, Sharon Ewane and Fiona Jones.

“All the staff involved think the programme is very important as it allows students really focussed time to work on the areas they need to improve. Being ‘taught’ rather than left to their own devices supports this process.”

And the growing success of the scheme will see Saturday science classes soon being offered.
