GREAT Sankey residents are being urged to contact the council’s recycling team following a host of complaints over the number of bin collections.

Families on Moss Dale Close have said they have been struggling to cope in the hot weather since black wheelie bin collections were switched to every fortnight.

Mum Daryl Cowley said: “We still have a week left before the bins are emptied and I opened the bin today only to have maggots drop on my hand.

“We have two small children, both of whom were extremely upset when they followed me out to the bin to help and are afraid to even go into our garden.

“This really has got to be addressed. We don’t live in a third world country, we live in Warrington, Cheshire!”

A council spokesman said staff on the recycling team can discuss extra help and support available.

He added: “Unfortunately during the hot weather flies can be attracted to waste and, although rare, maggots may develop.

“To prevent flies being attracted to and breeding in bins, all meat, fish and dairy waste should be wrapped – wrapping waste in newspaper and then a supermarket carrier bag provides a very effective barrier.

“Eat, cook and store food properly, or place it wrapped in the bin as soon as possible.”
