Residents say potholes and cracked pavements pose a serious risk to pedestrians

GLAZEBURY residents are calling for a full repair of village pavements and crossing points.

Villagers have been complaining to Warrington Borough Council about the state of Warrington Road since December 2012.

Walkways outside the Comfortable Gill Inn and Foresters Arms were highlighted as surfaces began to deteriorate and flooding started to affect the area.

While plans to repair the road have been included in this year’s council budget, residents say pedestrian needs have been ignored.

Bernard Wells, who regularly uses the road and led the complaint, said: “There are points that are depressed, they collect water and you have to step out onto the road in some cases to avoid the ponds.”

This year, one area of concern outside the Foresters Arms’ car park was addressed and two other temporary repairs have been made, however Bernard says enough has not been done.

He added: “The rest has not been touched and it is becoming particularly hazardous.”

Residents are now calling for a full repair of the pavements, crossings and a problematic drain.

Victor Roberts, licensee of the Comfortable Gill Inn, said: “I’m really disappointed with the council’s handling of the situation.

“We have women who pass with prams and have to go onto the road to get around the water and many more people have mentioned how much of a mess it is.

“I’m also worried in case it freezes up one day because someone driving past will end up in my pub.

“I’ve been patching up parts of my own car park, but I can’t touch anything outside as it does not belong to me.”

A Warrington Borough Council spokesman added: “The decline in the condition of the roads is a national issue and has been accelerated in recent years following severe winters.

“The council has been awarded extra funding which will be used to tackle potholes over the next five years.

“There is work due to start in the next few weeks which will improve access to Bents Garden Centre and when this is completed there is a scheme planned for Warrington Road in Glazebury in 2015 which will address some of the issues raised.”
