BRICK pillars representing the original gateway into Orford Park are back in their rightful place after the completion of a £1.6M sewer project.

The pillars had been removed to allow United Utilities to access the park to carry out major work on its sewer network.

Plans had proposed the pillars be put back in a different position, but following discussions with Warrington Borough Council they had been put back in the original place.

The water company has also restored the pillars.

Clr Kate Hannon, executive board member for leisure, community and culture, said: "There were strong views from residents and councillors, who wanted to make sure the posts were put back in their original place.

"I am pleased to say that we were able to achieve this following various discussions between the council, ward councillors and United Utilities and thanks to some great partnership working.

“United Utilities agreeing to give the posts a makeover were the icing on the cake. I want to thank everyone involved."

The work by United Utilities is aimed at improving the cleanliness of Sankey Brook

It saw a sewage tank and pipes replaced with bigger versions in Orford Park, allowing more rain to be stored, and stop the sewer overflowing into the brook.

Jose de Freitas, United Utilities project manager, said: “We’re delighted everyone worked together to get these posts improved and back in their rightful place.

“Together with the improvements to Sankey Brook, we’re proud the environment at Orford Park has been improved for the community.”

And United Utilities has also pledged to provide improvements in the park, including more seats.

Diane Clarke, central area neighbourhood wellbeing manager at LiveWire, said: "LiveWire worked closely with United Utilities and Warrington Borough Council during the works to ensure that park users were able to continue to enjoy their visit during the maintenance work.

"As a thank you to the park users United Utilities have offered to provide some improvements to the park.

The Orford Park community group has met to discuss the top three items that the park would benefit further from including additional seating areas.”
