Appeal for rugby players

A NEW rugby team is now up and running in Westbrook.

The North West Tigers ARLFC is an open age rugby team which train at Mary Ann Meadows on Blackshaw Drive.

The team trains on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.

An appeal has been launched to find more players.

Police to tackle speeding motorists

A CRACKDOWN on speeding has been launched in problem areas by Cheshire Police.

Officers will be targeting Westbrook Crescent following reports of speeding motorists.

Speed checks are to be carried out to monitor the issue after it was listed as a priority by police.

 

Boots launch travel vaccination service

BOSSES at Boots on the Gemini Retail Park have launched a travel vaccination service in store.

Holidaymakers can now get their hands on travel vaccinations and malaria tablets in store.

Boots offer a free consultation

Assistant store manager Jacob McWhan said: "We are aware some vaccinations are free at GP surgeries but some are not.

We offer this service as we are open from 9am to 9pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 8pm Saturday so this is a really convenient service to provide."

 

Plans to build bungalow on derelict site in Winwick

PLANS to build a new bungalow on the same site where a fire engulfed a house killing a war veteran are in the early stages of development.

The house on 2 Gerosa Avenue in Winwick was destroyed after a blaze broke out on Monday, July 7, killing 94-year-old Samuel James.

Blueprints to build a bungalow on the now derelict land are under considered.

Anyone who has any queries or concerns with regards to the planning application should write to the council within 21 days.

 

Kind-hearted Callands man puts his own stamp on fundraising

IT first started off as a hobby but now a Callands man has put his stamp collection to good use.

James McDowell, of Monkswood Close, has been collecting British and Foreign postage stamps in aid of the Genesis Cancer Unit at the University Hospital of South Manchester for a number of years.

The Genesis Unit provides a base for what has been described as one of the most ambitious breast cancer research programmes in Europe.

It offers diagnostic and treatment services to men and women living with breast cancer as well as screening more than 50,000 people a year.

The 84-year-old is calling for residents to help him with his collection mission by sending in stamps to 29 Monkswood Close, Callands.

 

Countdown to Burtonwood's first food and drink festival

AS the opening day of Burtonwood's first food and drink festival draws closer, organiser Andy Carr has revealed what is in store for punters.

From cakes and coffee to fruit and fudge, so far 11 stalls have been confirmed at the festival.

Beer lovers and keen foodies can enjoy a range of different eats and treats when the two day festival on June 27 and 28 takes over the Burtonwood Community Centre.

Food retailers which have confirmed so far include Upper Crust Sandwich and Coffee bar from Llandudno, Shirley's Pies from Poulton-le-Fylde, Hoffle Waffle from Liverpool and Richards Preserves from Greater Manchester.

Residents will also be selling their homemade produce including cakes and honey.

Majestic wines and 4T's Brewery from Runcorn will also be setting up shop.

There will be live entertainment during the festival with The Patriots, Lorna Adams and Tamsin Jane all set to take to the stage.

A bouncy castle has been booked.

The festival will be open from 10am to 11pm on the Saturday and 10am to 8pm on the Sunday.

Entry to the festival will be free and all ages are welcome.

 

Winwick home gets green light

BLUEPRINTS to turn an office space into a residential property have been approved.

Planning permission has been granted to transform the property on Newton Road in Winwick back to its original state.

The work can go ahead as long as certain conditions are followed.

This is includes starting the building work within three years.
