Winwick play area gets a makeover

A CASH boost of £25,000 has paved the way for the play area at Winwick Leisure Centre to under go a much-needed makeover.

Councillors at Winwick Parish Council were awarded the grant by WREN - a not for profit business which awards funds to community, environmental and heritage projects across the UK.

The money is donated by FCC Environmental to the Landfill Communities Fund.

Vice-chairman of Winwick Parish Council Sue Gordon said: "The children of Winwick school were asked what they would like to see on the play area, so they drew pictures and gave explanations about why they needed an upgrade.

"The zip wire was a much-wanted item and, even in this weather, has been in great demand.

"A very big thank you to WREN and the children, who I’m sure are going to get great use out of the equipment."

Greenbelt land set for development near Burtonwood

PLANS to build homes in a designated greenbelt area between Burtonwood and the St Helens village of Clockface have been given the green light.

The proposals were approved by St Helens council on February 5 to enable French Fields to start work on the two acre site, which currently lies empty.

Blueprints reveal that the land, which was previously occupied by engineering business Sherdley Remec, will now pave the way for 18 custom build sites to be purchased by homeowners with the plots to be 'shovel ready' by April.

Developer Mark Ward said: “With the additional support of government funding, which recognises the importance of custom build in the UK, derelict land is developed, more affordable homes will be built, local trades will benefit and the dream of owning a home designed for yourself becomes a genuine reality."

Plans for Europa House

AN application to increase the parking capacity at Europa House by 36 spaces has been withdrawn after planning chiefs raised concerns about the proposed rise in parking provision.

Plans to add the spaces as well as creating cycle parking while carrying out landscaping at the site on Europa Boulevard have been taken off the table.

The blueprints to create the space were said to be 'well in excess of the appropriate standards set out in the draft standards for parking in new development'.

A second application to build outside condenser units and as well as making outside changes to the office building have been give the green light as long as they stick to the regulations set out by the planning department.

Elm Tree pub demolished

THIS was the scene when the Elm Tree pub in Burtonwood was demolished after years of speculation about its fate.

It has been hailed as the end of an era as pub on Chapel Lane was reduced to rumble earlier this month.

A member of St Helens & Districts CAMRA was on hand to take these snaps which were described as 'a sad sight for Burtonwood'.

It still remains unclear what is to become of the land but it understood the land will likely make way for the development of residential properties.

However, this has yet to be confirmed.
