Community game launched in Westbrook supermarket

STAFF at a supermarket in Westbrook have launched a new game in store to raise money for the community.

Asda, which can be located on the Westbrook Shopping Centre on Cromwell Avenue, is holding a trial run of Feed the Pig.

Customers are encouraged to make a small donation to the piggy bank on the fruit stand in the foyer and in return then can pick up a piece of fruit.

The game will run until January 31.

Winwick hospital plans revealed

PLANS to build a single story extension to a hospital in Winwick, which provides care to women with personality disorder and mental illness, have been submitted to the council.

Blueprints to extend the Gregory building at Arbury Court on Townfield Lane to create three bedrooms and lounge are now under consideration.

The developer is also seeking planning permission to build an extension to the Macarthur building.

Burtonwood pub set to be demolished

THE Elm Tree pub in Burtonwood is set to be demolished imminently after the prior approval application was given the green light by the council.

Although planning permission is not required to go ahead with the demolition, the method used to bring down the build must be considered.

Neighbouring pub the Bridge Inn in Burtonwood has already been demolished after the building was deemed too dangerous to be left standing.

Council planners made the decision due to concerns over public safety.

It is understood the current owners of the plots of land plan to build residential housing on the sites if they are given the go ahead to knock down The Elm Tree but these plans have not been confirmed.

Westbrook to benefit from 'significant investment' in school

THE executive board member for children and young people’s services has hailed the plans to extend a primary school in Westbrook as a 'significant investment' for the future of schools.

Cllr Jean Carter, executive board member for children and young people’s services, welcomed the approval of the blueprints at a planning meeting earlier in the month.

Now that the application has been given the green light, St Philip Westbrook has the required permission to convert from a two-form entry to a three-form entry.

She said: “We have experienced significant growth in west Warrington as a consequence of housing developments and we currently anticipate this continuing for the foreseeable future.

"Consequently it has been necessary to increase the admissions to a number of primary schools in the area including St Philip CE.

"Plans are underway to extend the school permanently and we will shortly be inviting tenders for a contract to deliver those plans.

“This is an exciting time for those existing and new communities in the West Warrington area who will benefit hugely from significant investment at all of the schools involved.”

Head teacher Jacqui Wightman added: “Here at St Philips we welcome the increase in our intake and look forward to welcoming our new pupils.

"We are also pleased, that due to this change, our school will be extended and renovated in the coming year to accommodate the increase in our pupil and teacher population.”
