Church to celebrate 300th birthday

PREPARATIONS for the 300th anniversary of St Michael's Church in Burtonwood are under way.

The church on Chapel Lane was founded in the 1600s but was built on its current site in 1716.

According to the editor of Burtonwood Matters, it was started in the reign of Queen Anne and was dedicated in 1716.

This was more than 100 years after the parish church of St Michael's and All Angels was established to serve the people of Burtonwood and Collins Green.

In celebration, church members plan to continue to repair and restore the church silver and replace pieces beyond repair.

These items will be dedicated at Michaelmas and serve as a gift to members of St Michael's for the next 300 years.

Concerns raised over flood warnings in Callands

A PARISH councillor has raised concerns about the repercussions of the Environment Agency publishing red warnings in Callands over the Christmas period.

Bernard Long, who is a member of the Burtonwood and Westbrook Parish Council, has called on the Environment Agency to provide answers following the recent flooding in the town.

He said: "One issue is that the Environment Agency appear to have blighted many roads in Callands by publishing red flood warnings for them over Christmas.

"Their own flood maps and their own staff say that there is no risk of these roads flooding.

"Their experts have been very insistent on there not being a risk.

"Some residents appear to have been contacted by their insurance company about the Environment Agency posting a red alert for them.

"We now can expect increased insurance costs for a non-existent risk.

"The Environment Agency must be made to explain why they have blighted areas that do not have any elevated risk of flooding."
