Appeal launched to find recruits for youth club programme

THE search is on to find young volunteers to join Warrington Youth Club's (WYC) Loud and Clear project.

Bosses at WYC are on the hunt for 60 recruits to take part in the 12-week courses which aims to arm volunteers with vital skills and experience.

The scheme is backed by Cheshire Community Foundation which has awarded a £9,728 grant in recognition of the club's work.

Dave McNicholl, chief executive of WYC, which is based at the Peace Centre, said: "We get a wide mix of youngsters on our Loud and Clear programme, some of whom lack confidence and self esteem.

"Our aim is to help them become volunteers and at the same time gear them up to work in different environments, whether that's with children, adults or the elderly.

"The grant from the foundation helps us enormously with support costs to deliver this programme."

Cheshire Community Foundation has awarded almost £1.5m to more than 400 organisations in the three years since it was set up.

Callands nursery praised by Ofsted

A NURSERY in Callands has seen its Ofsted rating improve after it was graded as good across the board.

Kidsunlimited day nursery on Gresford Close, which was previously rated as satisfactory, was praised by inspectors following a visit on February 19.

In the report, which can be read in full on the Ofsted website, staff were commended for assessing children's progress effectively and making sure they are ready for their next stage of learning at school.

Children were described as 'happy, settled and confident' and the staff act as good role models, which further develops children's understanding.

The management and staff are motivated and eager to improve their skills and staff work closely with parents to support children's ongoing development, the report read.

Inspectors also praised the safeguarding and protection of children, adding that the youngsters feel safe and secure.

The nursery missed out on the top rating of outstanding as occasionally staff do not promote good communication and language skills when interacting with children.

Staff also do not always provide opportunities for children to see numbers, letters and text around the setting to develop their literacy and numeracy skills even further.

St Gregory's pupils back campaign

HUNDREDS of pupils at St Gregory's High School have backed a campaign to stop child sexual exploitation following a national awareness day.

Both staff and students at the school on Cromwell Avenue have taken part in an art project to raise awareness of the issue and promote a zero-tolerance attitude to these type of offences.

Each of the six form groups have made their mark by placing their hand print on a canvas using paint.

Cover supervisor, Helen McSorley, who organised the campaign along with Maria Small, said: "It was about making the pupils aware for their own safety and so they can help others."
