Charity appeal for host families

HOSTS are needed to help care for children affected by the Chernobyl disaster who are coming to Warrington this summer.

Burtonwood Chernobyl Children's Lifeline provides opportunities for Belarusian children, suffering from the after-effects of the 1986 nuclear disaster, to visit this country and boost their immune system.

Colin Frodsham, who organises the project, said the charity is in need of families who are willing to open up their homes to the children, who have all been taught English from the age of six.

He said: I'm desperately seeking kind families to host nine to 10 year old Belarus children for four weeks in July and August.

"Every kind of assistance is given 24/7 to the host family."

This will be the 19th group to visit the town, who will take part in a range of organised activities throughout their stay.

Concerns raised in Collins Green

SPEEDING, congestion and heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) are just three of the main issues raised by Collins Green residents.

Derek Atherton, of Penkford Lane, has spoken out over the main issues facing the area and has called for action.

He said: "Over the years we have seen a great deal of development in the Burtonwood and Collins Green area such as junction eight of the M62, Omega South, and now Omega North.

"Unfortunately the road infrastructure in the village has not kept pace with the developments, and is certainly to blame for a great deal of the current problems."

In 2008, the HGV restrictions which were put in place in Burtonwood were extended to include Collins Green but Mr Atherton has argued that this is not monitored closely enough.

He said: "The current situation is the police hardly ever carry out enforcement.

"The reporting system is still in place and I act as the communicator with the police reporting on a weekly basis.

"We are now in the thousands with the number of HGVs that have been reported but the police do not follow up repeat offenders."

He also raised concerns about traffic gridlock backing onto Penkford Lane during rush but also speeding on the same road during quieter hours.

He added said the road has now become dangerous and is an 'accident waiting to happen'.
