A MULTI-MILLION pound project to regenerate Longford is under way.
The programme will see old walls demolished and replaced along with some driveways being resurfaced and new gates installed.
Roy Humphries, chairman of Longford Residents’ Association, said: “I was proud to be on hand as the first brick was demolished from one of the castle walls.
“It will be great to see these improvements being made and we all look forward to seeing the finished work.”
The programme of refurbishment by the Golden Gates Housing Trust is expected to take 12 months.
Roy Smith, chairman of GGHT, said: “I look forward to seeing this work progress over the coming months and breathing new life into the Longford area.
“The improvements that we are undertaking will make a huge difference for residents and we are also committed to ensuring that they benefit from the opportunities it will create to support people back into work.”
GGHT will be working alongside Apollo Property Services and Bramall Construction, while Warrington Borough Council will improve footpaths, access to properties and street lights.
Clr Mike Hannon (LAB – Orford), deputy leader of Warrington Borough Council, said: “I’m really pleased to see this project getting under way and would like to say a huge thank you to GGHT and Warrington Borough Council for making this a reality.
“I hope that the residents will recognise the efforts that are going into improving the appearance of their area and will help to maintain the quality for many years to come.”
The regeneration scheme is part of the Quality of Life project.
It aims to create employment, training and apprentice opportunities for residents in Longford as refurbishment work progresses.
