THERE will be no communal Christmas tree in Paddington for the third year running, parish council officials have confirmed.

The 25ft traditional tree, formerly placed on Manchester Road, was absent in 2012 and 2013 because Poulton with Fearnhead Parish Council could not afford it.

It costs around £2,000 to order from Warrington Borough Council, be installed, and power, over the holiday period.

However, over the last two years, a carol service has been provided for residents instead of the tree, because it is cheaper at £500.

And the same decision has been made for this Christmas.

Details of two carol services were confirmed at a meeting of the parish council at Fearnhead Cross Community Centre, Insall Road, last Monday.

Speaking afterwards, chairman Clr Poul Gosney said: "A debate arose within the parish council, as to the viability of erecting and maintaining a Christmas tree, and was a separate agenda item in its own right.

"After obtaining details of the expected costs, the parish council decided that better use should be made of those moneys in further sponsorship of specific events with the community of Poulton with Fearnhead.

"The parish council wishes to provide its community with some cheer during the festive season.

"Once again this year the parish council is sponsoring two carol concerts.

"Last year around 400 people attended both concerts.

"The feedback was, they were greatly appreciated."

The first carol concert takes place at the Dog and Partridge, Manchester Road, on Wednesday, December 10.

The second carol concert takes place at St Oswald's Primary School, Padgate Lane, on Wednesday, December 17.

Both concerts are expected to start at 7.30pm.
