A DEDICATED support worker at Fearnhead Cross Community Centre has been made redundant as part of council cutbacks.

Sue Emery, a long-time servant of youth work and community projects for the council’s east neighbourhood team, has given an emotional goodbye after losing her job.

Her last day was Friday.

In a letter to Poulton-with- Fearnhead Parish Council, Sue said: “I will be sorry to leave as I have met and worked with some lovely people.

“I shall in particular miss the communities I have served, they have kept me well and truly in touch with reality over the years.

“There have been some happy times, and also very sad times.

“I have also lost some friends, which at times has been unbearable, however, I have always found comfort and support from the volunteers in the area.”

The redundancy has been criticised by community officials.

Charlie Hulse, secretary of Cinnamon Brow Residents’ Association, had worked alongside Sue.

He said: “It’s a disgrace that Sue has lost her job when she’s the most qualified and committed person to do it.

“We are trying to find some sort of work for her to do because she is dedicated to the community.”

The east neighbourhood team has been subject to upheaval in recent months.

It moved into Fearnhead Cross, Insall Road, before the team was reduced.

Clr Geoff Settle (Poulton North – LAB), who also praised Sue’s work, said staff were forced to re-apply for jobs.

A council spokesman said: “Like all other council services, the team has had to make changes as a result of the Government reducing funding. This has resulted in a number of job losses.”

The council said job losses would not affect youth provision at the community centre.
