Bowled over by community help

A BEWSEY club has been bowled over by support from businesses who have offered help to replace its pavilion.

St Alban’s Bowling Club launched a business community challenge appealing for support after its pavilion was destroyed by a fire in September last year.

The Bewsey Street club joined forces with ward councillors and staff from the council’s neighbourhood development team and despite the credit crunch it was inundated with offers of help and supplies.

The club has had help with demolishing and removing the pavilion. Skips and concrete footings have been donated and electricians and plumbers have given their time and skills for free.

And now just a few months on, work to clear the site started last week.

Clr Kate Hannon, executive board member for leisure, community and culture, said: “The pavilion is a well used, much-needed community resource and the team has been delighted with the fantastic response from the business community especially in light of the credit crunch. I would like to thank everyone who is involved in this project.”

The club would like to thank M O’Hallaran Ground Works, BT Skips, Paul Smith from ABC Concrete, Dave Summer from Blythewood Plant Hire and DW Hargreaves (electrician).

Anyone who can donate a cabin should ring Stephen Murphy, community development officer, on 638871.
