PENKETH residents have been criticising the council over 20mph speed limit signs erected at the entrance to Haslemere Drive, only to be moved weeks later.

The bases for the signs were installed last month as part of council plans in 2012 to make cars on all residential roads slow down.

But homeowners were surprised to see soon after the posts were put up, contractors were back again to move them.

Neighbours have described the signs as a waste of cash.

Dave Cowan added: “I saw the contractors marking the pavement about 10ft from the original spot.

“Our road is a u-shape and a car would be hard pushed to get up to that speed along the road anyway so the signs don’t even seem necessary.

“As I do not yet know the reason for these events, I can’t comment on the wisdom or otherwise of the erection and subsequent removal of the signs but one thing I do know is that myself and every other council taxpayer in Warrington is footing the bill.

“We seem to read every week in the Warrington Guardian of cutbacks needing to be made by a cash strapped council which inevitably lead to job losses in essential services, so why is money being thrown away in this manner?”

The Warrington Guardian reported in 2012 that introducing 20mph speed limits on most roads in the town would cost £740,000.

A council spokesman said: “Following feedback that the signs were affecting access for residents with prams and wheelchair users the contractor will be relocating the signs as soon as possible to a more suitable location.”

Relocation will be free of charge.
