AN Appleton husband and wife team pedalled from Vietnam to Cambodia in just six days for a charity bike ride which raised over £3000.

Martin and Karen Evans, along with friend Fiona Buckley, from Hale, cycled all the way from Ho Chi Minh City to Siem Reap to raise funds for the Hospice of the Good Shepherd.

Having returned from the gruelling challenge in time for the new year celebrations, the trio admitted that the road conditions and suffocating humidity made the 400km route tough going.

“Unfortunately as many of the roads were in a poor state of repair there were quite a few crashes along the way, but thankfully everyone managed to finish the course," said 48-year-old Martin.

“In the 35 degree heat and with 85 per cent humidity, the long days, cycling for hours on end, definitely took their toll.

"But it really was a huge achievement when we finally crossed that finish line."

The trio managed to raise just over £3,000 for the hospice - which helps improve the quality of life for those living with any incurable illness - with significant support also coming from their workplaces.

North west based Pesto Italian Restaurant, for whom Martin works as a finance director, agreed to match any money donated by Pesto employees which has resulted in a total company contribution of almost £800.

Karen, who works as a pharmacist at Warrington Hospital, has also received numerous donations from staff at the hospital - with more still coming in.

Martin added: “We’ve been truly astounded at the generosity of people who have come forward to support our cause.

"Initially we were hoping to raise about £1,500 so to have doubled that is unbelievable.

“We want to thank everyone for their help and support as we know this money means a lot to the hospice and will help them continue the fantastic work they do.”
