IT has taken more than a decade but the first occupier could move onto Omega in 12 months time.

The company which owns the sites has just submitted an application for a new warehouse on the Omega North part of the former RAF Burtonwood site.

The development, for an as yet unnamed occupier, will be on a 17.9 acres plot and works will also include an infrastructure contract of more than £7m for an access road and associated services.

Andrew Sutherland, joint managing director for Miller Developments, one of the partners involved in the site, said the application for a ‘great leap forward’.

He added:: “With the associated infrastructure the deal will bring and outline planning consent already in place for 1.6m sqft of industrial and warehousing space, Omega North is ready to capitalise on the supply shortage in the North West for large distribution units.”

Clr Terry O’Neill, leader of Warrington Borough Council, added: “We have always maintained that the Omega site offers an almost unrivalled opportunity in the north west to create a commercial location of national significance. “The council has worked closely with Miller and other partners throughout this process to ensure this development is realised and hundreds of local jobs are created.”

Completion of the building is set for August 2013.
