SQUAD NEWS: Briers left out of Wolves' 19-man squad for Salford clash
2:27pm Friday 4th May 2012 in News
TONY Smith has left Lee Briers out of Warrington Wolves' 19-man squad to face Salford City Reds at the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Sunday, kick off 3pm.
Smith perhaps has one eye on next week's Challenge Cup clash with Catalan Dragons, naming 17-year-old second row Ben Currie in a squad that is also missing Chris Bridge and the injured Adrian Morley (neck) and Michael Monaghan (knee).
Under 20's forward Currie impressed Smith during first team appearances against Widnes Vikings and Keighley Cougars and has since continued that fine form in the Valvoline Cup, helping Wolves' academy side retain their place at the top of the table with a string of fine individual performances.
Nineteen-year-old hooker Brad Dwyer retains his place, with Rhys Williams also coming in to the squad.
Smith said: "Last weekend and recent weeks have seen us become a little bit more consistent in some of the areas we've been working on, and this is having an effect on the overall performance of the team.
"The players are working hard and they are committed to making improvements and that is starting to show on the pitch.
"Salford have some terrific attack this season and really challenge you if you're not on top of your own game.
"They can certainly punish you, and if areas of your defence aren't great they can make you pay.
"They have been playing a bit more expansive than they have done in the past which makes for attractive rugby league but also sets up a good challenge for each and every team that goes up against them."
Wolves 19-man squad to face Salford: Ryan Atkins, Matty Blythe, Garreth Carvell, Mike Cooper, Ben Currie, Brad Dwyer, Simon Grix, Ben Harrison, Micky Higham, Chris Hill, Brett Hodgson, Tyrone McCarthy, Joel Monaghan, Gareth O'Brien, Chris Riley, Trent Waterhouse, Ben Westwood, Rhys Williams, Paul Wood.
