SMOKERS in the town do not realise how damaging smoking is to their health and finances, according to latest statistics.

NHS Smokefree research found that in the north west 84 per cent of smokers underestimate the number of people who die annually from smoking related diseases by at least 70,000.

The actual figure is more than 80,000 deaths a year as a result of smoking and in 2009, 347 people in Warrington died from smoking-related illnesses.

Smokers in the region also underestimate the financial cost of smoking with the average 20-a-day smoker spending £1,745 per year.

A spokesman said: “Research shows smokers are underestimating this by more than £650.

“In reality, a 20-a-day smoker could save £2,405 a year if they quit.”

The survey also found smokers said they were too stressed to quit, whereas research has found quitting smoking reduces stress.

Clr Pat Wright, executive board member for health and wellbeing at Warrington Borough Council, said: “Quitting is not easy, but it can be made less difficult with the right support and tools. “Warrington’s Stop Smoking Service is here to help people break the cycle of addiction and quit for good.”
