VOTERS will go to the polls in Poulton North tomorrow, Thursday, following a fierce battle between the two rivals for the seat.

The Liberal Democrats have accused Labour of ‘astonishing arrogance’ ahead of the poll.

But Labour say the Lib Dems have wasted money on calling the by election.

In an increasingly bitter election campaign, senior Lib Dem councillor Bob Barr says Labour candidate Ashley Pemberton is too inexperienced to stand and urged voters to back former Lib Dem councillor, Colin Oliver who hopes to win this time.

Clr Barr said: “Has the Warrington North Constituency Labour Party become so amazingly arrogant that they feel they can foist an inexperienced student studying in Leeds on the electorate of Poulton North?

“Why are Labour insulting the electorate by putting up such an inappropriate candidate against Colin Oliver?

“Is it because they believe that the unpopularity of the Coalition government, for seriously trying to clear up Labour’s mess, is such that anyone wearing a red rosette will get elected?

“ If so, their astounding arrogance will be tested on Thursday when the voters of Poulton North will have their say.”

Labour meanwhile have criticised the Lib Dems for calling the by-election in the first place.

It takes 10 weeks after the May elections and at a cost of more than £10,000 to the taxpayer.

It was called after incumbant Sharon Wilson stepped down due to a new job in Manchester.

Clr Lottie Labbury, Warrington North constituency Labour party chairman, said: "In the face of devastating national cuts by their party which affect local people they choose to throw away a fortune on a by election for their convenience to try to get their man back in.

"Our candidate Ashley Pemberton would make a fantastic addition to the Labour group and would become part of a new generation of Labour councillors with a fresh perspective and drive to deliver for Poulton North and the town of Warrington."

Mark Champman stands for the Conservatives and James Ashington for UKIP.
