FORMER Warrington South MP Mike Hall is standing down at the next general election due to ill health.
He announced his decision to leave Westminster on Tuesday after serving for 18 years.
Mr Hall, aged 57, who now represents Weaver Vale, said: “It has been an enormous honour and privilege to serve as an MP.
“I have taken great pride in the work I have done for my constituents and I know this has been greatly appreciated.
“We have achieved a great deal together.”
Mr Hall has had a minor chronic heart condition called paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, AF, for the past 18 years.
This was managed successfully by medication until last July, when bouts of AF left him unable to drive or work effectively.
He underwent pulmonary vein isolation radio therapy surgery two weeks ago to correct his irregular heart beat.
Initially results were promising, but, after a week convalescing, his heart started beating very irregularly leaving him feeling uncomfortable, breathless and unable to work.
Mike said: “Reluctantly, due to health reasons, I have reached the decision to stand down.
“I do this in the hope that this will give me the best chance of making a full recovery. I now face the prospect of having further surgery in three months time.”
He served in Warrington South between 1992 and 1997.
