AN Appleton boxer is among a crop of athletes bidding for success this year under the wing of a Padgate gym owner.

Joe Thackray, aged 23, performed against Great Sankey's Andy McGeehan, aged 19, in his first amateur showdown at the Parr Hall on February 28 in front of a packed arena.

The three-round battle ended as a draw but the fight was honoured with the title of 'fight of the night' and described by event organisers, Boxing Night, as 'one of the best technical fights we've had'.

Attention now shifts to next month, where the pair, who are both trained at Marsh House Gym, by John Murphy, will again be in action, along with around 18 other fighters.

"Having a fight is nice as it gives me something to dedicate myself to and there is always a good vibe around the gym," said Joe.

"John has helped me massively I don't think he could have done any more.

"I think there is an obvious affection between all of us and John because he really makes a big effort to look after us and has our best interests at heart - he has been great."

But aside from developing the ring exploits of each individual, John is equally as focused on delivering his values of respect and discipline.

"Our aim here is to teach people the key values they need and show them how people should behave, in and out of the ring," said the 54-year-old former regional title holder.

"Joe and Andy performed superbly at the Parr Hall and everyone was also just as amazed by the respect they showed."
