MOTORISTS have been getting a surprise speeding past a Latchford school after getting a telling off by a group of very young officers.

Year five pupils at Our Lady's School on Wash Lane have been helping police warn drivers of the speed limit outside the school and stopped 15 drivers in 30 minutes.

CSOs Tom Reid and Tony Spruce, from Warrington South NPU, said the youngsters' help had been incredibly valuable spreading the road safety message.

Tony added: "I think drivers really got the message after being told off by a nine-year-old.

"After we pulled the drivers in, the pupils were explaining to drivers the dangers of speeding outside the school."

The initiative began with a road safety talk, including the green cross code, and demonstration using eggs to show the importance of using a helmet when riding a bike.

Youngsters also heard about braking distances at increased speeds and designed a leaflet to give to motorists who were exceeding the speed limit.

Tom added: "After that we attended the school with a Speed Identification Device (S.I.D) which flashes up with the vehicles speed.

"We demonstrated it in the school hall with pupils running at the device to set it off before placing it on Wash Lane.

"Vehicles that exceeded the speed limit were stopped further along Wash Lane where the drivers were advised on the dangers of speeding especially outside the school by year five pupils and Tony.

"The drivers were also handed one of the leaflets designed by the pupils."
