STOCKTON Heath Police Station is calling on motorists to drive safer after alarming speeding figures in Appleton Thorn.

It has been revealed that 51 vehicles were spotted speeding during two, two-hour periods, in October, at Grappenhall Lane, which is a 30mph zone.

The top speed recorded was of 52mph and community support police officer Dave Mahon, who patrols the Appleton Thorn area and is based at the Stockton Heath station, is calling on drivers to take more care.

"People do need to take care as at the end of the day, people could get seriously injured due to the speeding," he said.

"Hopefully, with the awareness raised on the issue, drivers take note and ensure the roads become safer.

"As well as posing a risk to others, the drivers who are speeding also pose a big risk to themselves.

"It is not easy but we will do everything that we can to make the roads a safer place for drivers and residents."

A mobile camera set up on Longwood Road, in Appleton, also exposed further acts of dangerous driving at the end of October.

A top speed of 46mph was recorded, with 16 motorists exceeding the 30mph limit - 9 of whom were local drivers.

Residents in the area continue to raise the issue at the monthly Appleton Parish Council meetings are hoping drivers take note of the potential dangers associated with speeding.

They hope that a permanent speeding camera will be installed in Appleton Thorn, though financial restrictions could make it difficult.
