A PENKETH High pupil is hoping to scoop the title of 'Warrington volunteers of the year' after narrowly missing out last time.

Ryan Ford was runner up in the competition in 2014 but is hoping for better luck in 2015.

And so far the 14-year-old has clocked up more than 150 hours of serving his community, including working with children and events such as the Victoria Park Experience and Warrington Livewire Mile.

He also runs weekly activities at Whitecross Community Centre including football, softball and rugby which has all led to him winning the ‘Young Voices of Warrington Member of the Year Trophy’.

Ryan added: “I love to volunteer as I get to work with kids and help out in the community.

"I’m really proud to have won the Young Voices Member of the Year."

The group was set up by Golden Gates Housing Trust (GGHT) as part of 'Takeover Day 2014', which gives children and young people the chance to work with adults for the day and be involved in decision-making.

The Takeover Day at GGHT saw Ryan, alongside five other young Warrington residents, support staff and tenants in deciding which applications would be successful in securing funding before a Dragon's Den-style marketing task.

Roy Smith, GGHT chairman, said: “I was delighted to be able to welcome these young people to GGHT for the day.

"This is a great initiative and gave the young people who took part the chance to shadow our staff and gain valuable experience in making decisions."
