THE return of the Burtonwood Beer Festival proved a popular decision after hundreds of punters raised a glass in the name of a collection of worthy causes.

This was the second time the festival was held at Burtonwood Community Centre on Green Lane after organiser Andy Carr vowed to turn the building into a community hub.

The event on October 22 and 23 was part of a line-up of festivals planned this year to bring the community together.

Although the final donation figures have yet to be confirmed, it has been estimated than more than £2,000 will be split between Abbie's Trust, Willowbrook Hospice and the community centre as a result of the generous donations from members of the public.

Abbie's Trust was set up to raise awareness of Rett Syndrome following the diagnosis of three-year-old Abbie-Rose, who will need access to specialist therapies and equipment for the rest of her life.

Willowbrook Hospice cares for people over eighteen years of age with a life-limiting illnesses living in the St Helens and Knowsley area.

Donations are also expected to be made to the Rotary Club and Warrington Signing Choir, who performed during the festival.

Burtonwood Community Centre manager Andy said: "It was definitely far bigger event than last year which is what we set out to achieve.

"It was a great couple of days and - even though we have not finishing counting - I know we have already beaten last year's fundraising amount.

"Once again we have had lots of positive feedback - which is great to hear."

Around 500 punters packed into the community centre to enjoy the 32 beers, two lagers and five draft ciders on offer.

Guests were entertained by the Warrington Signing Choir, soloist Lee Brady and musician Andrew Louis.

A total of 36 volunteers gave up their time over the two-day event to make sure the festival ran smoothly.

Andy added: "It all would not have been possible without their help so a big thank you must go to them."
