A BIRDS of prey rescue and rehabilitation centre has introduced some of its feathered friends to residents at St Oswalds Care Home in Winwick.

The team at Wild Wings visited the centre as part of national care home open day.

Director Carole Rose has thanked the staff and residents at the care home for their warm welcome.

She said: "It was nice to see everybody enjoying themselves despite the cold wind.

"All the birds were very well behaved and made lots of new friends from all age groups.

"Many people said they would come to visit us at White Moss when we open."

Warrington North MP praises work of care home staff in Callands

COFFEE and cake were on the menu when a Callands residential home celebrated care home open day for the third year.

Warrington North MP Helen Jones visited Callands Care Home where she presented Denise Woodey with a special award in recognition of her twenty years as a staff member.

Mrs Jones said: "It was excellent to celebrate care home open day with residents and staff of Callands Care Home.

"Caring is an extremely important yet sometimes under-appreciated profession, and I was very pleased to present Denise with her award for twenty years of service."

Appeal issued after car damaged by vandals

TYRES were slashed on a car in Old Hall last week.

Two tyres were damaged while the car was parked up overnight on Nansen Close on June 23.

Fair returns to Westbrook

WESTBROOK Old Hall Primary School's summer fair is to return on Saturday from 1pm to 4pm.

Guests are invited to bring their own picnic or enjoy the barbecue.

There will also be a tombola, raffle, hook-a-duck game and face painting taking place.

Raise a glass at Winwick's first beer festival

WINWICK is set to stage its first beer festival later this year.

More than 30 beers and ciders as well as a selection of food will be available when the event is hosted at Winwick Leisure Centre.

All profits raised from the event on September 11 and 12 will be donated to the RAF Benevolent Fund and the RAF Cadets in St Helens and Culcheth.

Doors open from 12pm to 12am

Entry prices start from £6 for the day including three half pint tokens.

Sponsors are also needed for the event with prices starting from £80 including four complimentary tickets.

Care home summer garden opens

A SUMMERHOUSE based in a care home has officially opened in Winwick.

The Friends of St Oswalds rolled up their sleeves to complete the project after securing funding of £9,579 for its reaching out initiative from the Big Lottery Fund.

Group member Avonia Haquani said: "We have been taking leaflets out into the community and talking to residents to find elderly people who may like to come in and enjoy the gardens and activities.

"Along the way we have already found four potential volunteers to come in and spend time with the residents."

Campaign launched in memory of those who fought in Battle of Winwick Pass

A CAMPAIGN to secure recognition for the Battle of Winwick Pass has been launched by a community group.

Members of One Local Voice have called on the public to back their efforts to stop the battle between King Charles I Cavaliers and Oliver Cromwell’s Roundheads from being 'airbrushed' from history.

The battle near to Newton-le-Willows and Winwick took place more than three centuries ago in 1648 and was one of the final conflicts of the second English Civil War.  

David Crowther, who is the chairman of Our Local Voice, said: "We have looked at projects across the UK in locations where there have been similar significant historical events.

“We note that where such schemes have been established it has helped promote a further sense of cultural cohesion and added to the points of interest within those communities.

"Our Local Voice has been working on a proposal that will both act as memorial, recognise something of national historical significance and as an amenity for both the present generation and for the many generations to come."

The group are hoping to secure planning permission to install three notice boards at unobtrusive locations and a granite monument with one of the notice boards integrated into the design.

A trail leading walkers to the notice boards and monument is also envisaged by the group.

Members of the community group will be at Winwick Carnival on July 18 to speak to the public about their plans.
